Some years ago there was a game called “Find Wally” where you had to look for the face of the elusive Wally on a page filled with thousands of faces. Well it was a little like that when it came to the breeze on our Wednesday sail—“Find Wind”. It was there and just as elusive as Wally. The thing that blew me away was the boat speed of some, where there seemed to be no breeze. The top of the water was motionless and yet boat speed was there. It could only indicate that the breeze was in the rigging and not hitting the water. It looked surreal.

Given that we needed a short course, to cover all the bases, course 18 C is just a clockwise loop around Green Island. The first leg, in a 4-5 knot easterly, was to the Western Cardinal. It was slack water so at this stage the tide played no part. However the fleet needed to get to the Northern Red before the start of the flood tide. This was the day’s problem! As the last of the boats started (14:02) the rest fleet were working hard between Green and St. Helena in a 2-3 knot breeze. It was hard work but once reaching the Northern Red things got easier with some tide assistance out to Germ (rec. mark).  At one stage looked like being the finish line. But the fickle Wally of a breeze appeared and the entire fleet made it to Lockyer Light where the fleet informed would now the finish line. Whilst it was a challenging arvo, it was a beautiful Brissy winters day and another great sail. Well done to all!!!
