Wednesday Afternoon Go Sailing
Every Wednesday, all year (weather permitting), enthusiastic yachties take the afternoon off and head down to RQYS for a sail on one of a number of courses around Green Island or out to the Hope Banks, just for the fun of it!
Rearrange your schedule and get on down to the RQYS Bar from 11.00am to enter your yacht or register your interest to crew. A small fee applies and the WAGS (Wednesday Afternoon Go Sailing) fleet – often more than 40 boats – is back in harbour before dark and join together for the now famous post-race sausage sizzle.
Our WAGS team will do their best to place visiting sailors on a yacht, but this is sometimes dependent on weather conditions and boat availability and we cannot guarantee that a position will be available. A visit to the Squadron though will not disappoint, providing an opportunity to enjoy a lunch by the water and soak up the atmosphere of the surrounds.

Start Line (Asked September 15, 2024 at 9:59 am):
Having done a couple of WAGS now, we are confused as to where on the boat you take as crossing the start line. We would have thought the bow but a couple of times it seems to have been mid-ship.
Answer:
As is often the case, the key to answering this question lies in knowing where to look. WAGS Sailing Instructions section 9.4 states, ‘The starting line will be between a staff displaying an orange flag on the start boat at the starboard end and an orange buoy at the port end…’ This means the Start Line is ‘drawn’ from the flag pole (staff) displaying the orange flag (often positioned at approximately mid-ships) to the orange buoy (known as the ‘start pin’).
WAGS WhatsApp group (Asked August 22, 2024 at 6:47 pm):
I understand that there is a WAGS WhatsApp group. How does one actually join this group?
Answer:
Great Question. The WAGS WhatsAPP Group is what we use to send out timely notices and the ROs daily briefing. To join download WhatAPP on your phone and then click the red “WhatsApp Notification Group” Button found on the WAGS Regatta page https://www.rqys.com.au/wags/
As Always if you need further assistance don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Sailing Office.
Are Furling headsail allowed? (Asked August 22, 2024 at 1:51 pm):
Another Skipper had also asked me if furling headsails are allowed?
Answer:
It Depends.
I Draw attention to Sailing Instruction 3.2 “The headsail must be fully hanked, or attached by means of a luff groove device, to the forestay…”.
This means if your headsail is the type to fit into a track on the furler it meets the “luff groove device” rule. However if the sail is only attached at the Head and Tack it is not permitted (Per Sailing Instruction 3.1).
Can you use multiple Head Sails in WAGS? (Asked August 22, 2024 at 1:45 pm):
Can more than one head sail be use during the race?
Answer:
Yes!
You can use more than one headsail over the course of the race. HOWEVER, only one may be hoisted at any time. This means the original sail must be dropped and then the new sail may be hoisted.
