It has been some time since we incorporated fitness classes at RQYS.   While fitness trends come and go, Pilates and Yoga are two which are mainstays and for very good reason.

If you have not become acquainted with these two types of workouts, let us introduce you:

Yogaˈyō-gə can be defined as:

“a spiritual discipline based on an extremely subtle science, which focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. It is an art and scince of healthy living. The word ‘Yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘Yuj’, meaning ‘to join’ or ‘to yoke’ or ‘to unite'”

In laymans terms, yoga can be thought of as a stretch class to improve flexibility and posture, while incorporating slower breathing and living in the moment to encourage mindfullness and stillness which is proven to improve mental health. If you are familiar with meditation and its benefits, you will enjoy yoga for the sense of calm and warmth it brings. Great for busy minds and stressed folk!

Pilates pə-ˈlä-tēz can be defined as:

“an exercise regimen that is typically performed on a floor mat or with the use of specialized apparatus and aims to improve flexibility and stability by strengthening the muscles and especially the torso-stabilizing muscles of the abdomen and lower back”.

For the masses, this means lying on the floor and building strength by repeating low-impact exercises. Given your muscles will be getting a deep workout, it’s not a bad idea to follow up with yoga to stretch out those newly-built muscle fibres and ease the strain on follow-up days.

With Reformer Pilates most popular nowadays (pilates on a spring-weighted machine), it is a privilege to get back to basics and use body-weight as natural resitance, in addition to the option of elastic bands, hand weights, circles and more to increase resistance.

With many people finding the reformer cumbersome and tedious with its constant adjustments to springs and weights, RQYS is excited to simplify the process and offer a safe and classic alternative.
