My helm, Liam Millar, and I spent a recent seven weeks training and competing in Europe at the Princess Sofia Regatta in Palma de Mallorca and the French Olympic Week in Hyères.

We surprised ourselves early on by showing good pace with the other Australian 49ers leading up to the first event and finding ourselves in the top ten in some races of the qualifying series. Some long, uneasy days in the middle of the event saw us stall slightly in the results. However, we finished off strongly and worked out easy mistakes in a week of post-regatta training with the Australian and New Zealand squad. I’ve also attached a photo for use, unfortunately, we didn’t get much photography done of us (No Spikey Mike in Europe) so I’ve only got a few training videos from our coach.

We continued our progression throughout the French Olympic Week despite Liam battling ill health and our first Mistral. We achieved similar successes as we did in Palma but importantly, we improved our weaker results and found the consistency that will take us to another level. This execution put just outside of the top five in the 40 boat Silver fleet but also we were the second placed Australian boat beating some Australian Sailing Pathway Teams.

Overall, this performance is demonstrative of where we should be in the early stages of our long Olympic journey as we’ve shown our potential in navigating the boat across the finish line alongside the best teams in the world. For us, it is now simply about being alongside those top boats more often.

We’re grateful for the club’s support which kept us upright through the logistical sides of things and in being able to keep our boat in good state through some tough conditions. A shoutout goes to our training partners, Luke and Kris who helped us massively in our speed work and sailing under pressure.

Will Bridge, 49er
