From August 22–29, I competed at the ILCA Under 21 World Championships in Ireland. The week brought a mix of conditions that was very testing, from light and shifty racing to strong breeze and long days on the water. After six days of competition, I finished 3rd overall — my first podium at a World Championship.

The regatta began with light, shifty conditions and two general recalls before we finally started under a black flag. My first two starts weren’t strong, and I had to settle for 33rd and 32nd.

Day two was very different, with 19 knots gusting up to 24. I managed a 9th in the first race but tipped in during a gust in the second, finishing 15th. Despite the swim, it felt like results that I could happily count.

On day three, with 14–20 knots on the course, I was more precise with my starts and positioning. In the first race I led for most of the way before being passed near the finish to take 2nd. An 8th in the second race gave me some momentum heading into finals.

The fourth day of racing brought lighter breeze, around 10–15 knots, and a couple of black flag starts before racing got underway. I rounded the top mark in 5th in race one but slipped to 11th after a big wind shift on the second upwind. I then finished 7th in race two —consistent enough results.

On day five, the conditions were cold and shifty, with winds from 12 knots gusting to 24. In the first race, I worked my way into the lead but was passed near the finish, ending 2nd. In the second race, sailed in lighter winds, I led again but lost the top spot when the breeze dropped in the middle of the course, finishing 2nd once more. These results put me in a strong position going into the last day.

The final day was windy again. In the first race I led from start to finish, winning with a clear margin. In the second race, I moved up through the fleet to take the lead on the outer top mark and held on for another win. Back-to-back first finishes were a great way to close out the championship and secure 3rd overall.

Finishing on the podium at the U21 Worlds was a milestone for me and a result I’m incredibly proud of. The regatta had highs and lows, but it reinforced the importance of consistency and staying focused across a long series.

I would like to give a big thank you to RQYS and Australian Sailing for their support, Adrian Finglas, Mitch Kennedy, Annie Eastgate and Ash Brunning for coaching in the lead up to this event, and to Mikael Lundh for coaching me at this regatta. Your support made this result possible.

This result motivates me even more as I continue working toward my long-term goals in the ILCA class.
