Last week 32 of our youth sailing members made the journey to Goolwa, South Australia to compete in the 2025 Australian Secondary Schools Teams Sailing Championships. Students from Moreton Bay College, Iona College, Moreton Bay Boys College and The Southport School qualified to compete and made the journey down early Tuesday morning for Swiss league racing to kick off on Wednesday through to the weekend. 

The competition concluded on Saturday with Moreton Bay College qualifing in the top 8 overall for the finals series and secured 1st Australian Female team. Moreton Bay Boys College claimed 13th overall, The Southport School 14th and Iona College in 20th out of the 22 team field.

For those that don’t know, schools teams racing is where a large proportion of our young members begin their journey at RQYS. School students first complete learn to sail courses at the academy to develop their skills to participate in schools training and racing, from tackers optis or start Sailing Quests, students then move into the national Pacer class. From here the young sailors become members of RQYS and begin their highschool training and racing journey from grades 7 to 12. Although normal to every sailor, Schools sailing as a sport offers a unique opportunity for junior school students to compete on a level playing field against more senior students, it is not year level divided unlike other school sports. Schools sailing also offers a great platform for male, female and co-ed schools to compete for the same overall Trophies.

Teams racing specifically offers sailors a unique discipline in sailing where teams of three boats are matched up against another team of three. This unique race style challenges sailors teamwork and tactical abilities in ensuring their team finishes with the least combined score. 

The venue in Goolwa, South Australia offers a fantastic spectator experience from the Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club Jetty and we look forward to receiving updates from parents, coaches and support staff who have made the journey down.
