The consistent comment after the race in the bar and made by all skippers at presentation was—“thank goodness for some stronger breezes”. I’m sure after some very ordinary weeks where all endured, at best, a steady drift, it was a welcome change to have to think about a reef! The breeze seemed to be a little stronger on the eastern side of Green and St. Helena islands so it made sense to get as much windward work done as possible on the western side of those islands. Hence course 26B.
So the start line was set up with the first mark of the course (Green Island Western Cardinal) perfectly to windward. It was good to watch as the fleet disappeared up the bay tacking all over the place. As they made their way between the islands and towards the St. Helena floating red a report of 25 apparent was the norm. A starboard turn at the mark would have come as a relief for the crew, once poles were in position, and all enjoyed a very quick run to the Hope Banks Rec. Mark. Another starboard rounding at Hope was followed by a broad reach back towards Lockyer Light. This was by far the fastest leg of the day and saw the fleet start to compress (standard Wags) ending with another very close finish with the line set just outside the harbour entrance. A GREAT SAIL!!
