Talk about extremes! To quote the Monohull winner Ken at presentation, “it was a bit sporty”. Hmmm, I thought of a different description- s*#!**!!!! In the 17 years I’ve been doing this, I don’t think I’ve witnessed an afternoon like this.

It all started off fine with all forecasts showing no more than 24 knots and the chance of a couple of showers. So the boats that turned up to sail were keen. I decided to keep everyone close to home, just in case, and chose the Green Island horseshoe. It’s now becoming a favourite with all. A nice windward beat from the start boat to the first mark at Lockyer Light was looking easy, SE 12-14 knots. However around the start time of Cathrine Mary a squall, and 22 knots came from nowhere giving immense grief to all concerned. Well done Tim! The squall left as quickly as it had arrived and the fleet continued on past Lockyer and onto the Green Island rec. mark (GERM), rounding it to starboard, then back to Lockyer and to a beautiful run in flat seas north to the Green Island western cardinal. Another starboard rounding and out toward the Green Island northern red. This is where it all went s*#!**!!!! Attempting to get back down to GERM another squall arrived and brought with it 28+ knots. The bay got angry and stood up like an angry dog. Not good!! However everyone handled it very well. Once finally getting to Germ, the second squall had dissipated and the fleet relaxed on the run home between Green and St. Helena to the finish north of the leads. A very well done to all that sailed!!!
