Wednesday Afternoon GO Sailing

December 07, 2023

WIND: N-NE-10-14 Knots

TIDE: H@ 16:00

COURSE: Delta

NUMBER OF BOATS: 48

Another amazing Wednesday arvo just made for sailing. If you thought last week was good, this week was even better. It was far more enjoyable out on the bay with a beautiful nor’easter in your face, than the sweltering heat back on shore. Oh those Brizzy summer afternoons!

The forecast breeze was as expected and even though it was fairly light, it remained consistent and provided a big fleet with near perfect conditions.

Choosing Course Delta turned out to be a wise decision. While not the lengthiest route in the playbook, it effectively covered the potential conditions of the day. The course led us on a lengthy journey from the starting boat (anchored at the southernmost point in Waterloo Bay) past the western cardinal of Green Island, all the way up to the top mark— the floating red at St. Helena.

Considering the flooding tide, strategic thinking came into play, favoring those who hugged the western side of Green and avoided the stronger currents. A starboard turn at the top mark was succeeded by a leisurely run down the eastern side of Green Island, passing the new recreational mark east of Green to Lockyer light.

Things took an exciting turn at this point. The fleet experienced the typical compression, relishing the close company that only Wags can offer. Keeping Lockyer to starboard, the fleet returned on the breeze, heading 290 degrees, and made its way to the finish line set as far northeast in the bay as possible—just to spice things up! A fantastic fleet and an overall exhilarating sailing experience!
