COURSE: 1BR
NUMBER OF BOATS: 40
There were some grey and ominous sky’s hanging about, but the promise of an awesome sou ‘easter brought out 40 boats with skippers and crew eager to excel. Still not knowing for sure if some of the recreational marks around the bay had survived cyclone Alfred and considering the blow last Monday night, it was common sense to use a course that had guaranteed marks. It turned out to be a regularly used Wags course from the past and by the comments in the bar, enjoyed by all.
So it was a nice reach from the start boat to the Green Island western cardinal where a starboard turn took the fleet north east and all the way to the floating red at St. Helena. All very kind and gentle thus far! Another starboard turn at the mark started a work leg all the way to the Hope Banks Rec. mark. The fleet saw around 20 knots across the decks and a couple of gear and sail failures being the result. This leg saw most boats going right on a port tack and over towards Green Island before arriving at Hope on starboard. As I write, to my knowledge, there were no deaths or carnage at the mark.
Another starboard turn at Hope saw the fleet start to compress and enjoy a quick running reach home past Lockyer light to the finish just outside the harbour entrance all escaping any possible wet weather. Great day!!!
