Miraculous Conditions Bless 48-Boat Fleet
A fantastic fleet of 48, including 12 Multi’s, turned up to an afternoon truly heaven sent. After the disappointing breeze last week, this week was a cracker! It was if by some miracle that at the exact start time of the first boat, the breeze turned up, from the correct direction and pressure and stayed consistently all afternoon. It also provided some great racing and close finishers.
Alpha reverse is one of the original Wags coursers measuring approx. 12 nm and always enjoyed by all. From the start boat it was a very competitive beat to Lockyer Light. So many different sized boats make for very interesting tactics. To watch 63 footers racing boats around half their size was a joy to behold. Once at Lockyer, it was out to the Hope Banks RM. The breeze at this stage went slightly left and made all skippers and crew carefully consider their options. Some headed north for the first tack, but at the end of the day it turned out to be the incorrect option as those south of the lay- line made the best of the shifts. Once around Hope it was a nice run back between Green and St. Helena Islands before a port turn at the western cardinal saw the fleet harden up on the breeze and have a fast reach home to the finish boat just outside the harbour leads. 3 seconds separating 1st and 2nd in the Multi fleet. Well done to all!! Another great Wednesday Afternoon Go Sailing.
