Wednesday Afternoon GO Sailing

March 14, 2024

WIND: SE-18-22 Knots

TIDE: H@11:38

COURSE: Echo

NUMBER OF BOATS: 34

A Fast run home, surfing the bay came in to its own!

The forecast of a stronger breeze about for the day enabled one of the longest coursers to be used for the afternoon festivities. It gives a couple of long legs and room to spread out in the bay until, a mark of the course gets in the way, then things get crowded and busy.

The start boat was in in place just sou’east of the harbour leads and watched all boats start in 18 knots of breeze on a fast running reach to the first mark, the western cardinal at Green Island. A starboard turn and it was north to the floating red at St. Helena in some very nice conditions. Some boats started with riffs and tucks and some waited until this mark to reduce sail before the long beat to the Hope Banks RM. Around 25 knots across the decks was the norm and all skippers and crews were working hard. The fleet converged at the mark and for the most it was well managed. We all need to be aware of the many different type of vessels that compete in Wags and be respectful of everybody’s piece of water! Another starboard turn at the mark and it was a very fast run home via Lockyer Light. I believe that the second event we ran on the day, surfing, came into its own on this leg. It’s a great skill and a ton of fun to ride the wake. The finish boat was just where it was left it and a fast finishing fleet enjoyed another great Wednesday Afternoon Go Sailing.
