An exhilarating experience for those that ventured the bay!
The official forecast must have scared some skippers and crew away, but with the information available from many, and in some cases better weather sites, those that turned up for an afternoons sail didn’t regret their decision. The expected strong wind was outside Moreton and Stradbroke Islands with a line around Hope Banks also showing 20-25 knots. So course Delta allowed the fleet to stay inside the stronger wind and enjoy a fantastic and competitive race.
With the start boat set as far south as possible in the bay, the early starters set off on a very gentle run to the Green Island western cardinal in around 8-10 knots of breeze. Around 13:30 the pressure had increased to 15-18 knots giving the latter starters a slight advantage. However by that stage the front of the fleet were approaching the St. Helena southern cardinal and on their way up to the floating red where a starboard rounding saw the breeze come on to the nose and create a beat to the Green Island Rec. Mark (GIRM). Some of the words used in the bar afterwards were exhilarating and challenging. Once around GIRM it was reach to Lockyer Light and back to the finish boat anchored just outside the harbour leads. With 15-20 knots of breeze, it was a fast and close finish. Exceptionally well done to all!
