5th April 1942 – 11th December 2025

We are saddened to share the passing of Past Commodore John Miall, a highly respected sailor and 51-year member of our Squadron community.

John served as Commodore from 2002 to 2004, guiding the Squadron through a period of steady development and strengthening the spirit of fellowship that remains at the heart of RQYS today.

His dedication was recognised early on when he was named Club Member of the Year in 1998, acknowledging his outstanding contribution to the Squadron. He later received Life Membership in June 2005, one of the Squadron’s highest honours. John was also a passionate and accomplished sailor. He was part of the crew of the Etchell “Tool Box” with Peter White and Steve Girdis and winning the National Championship in 1990 & Queensland Championship in 1990–1991.

A well-known photograph shows Tool Box competing at the World Championships off Fremantle, capturing John’s and the crews love for the sport.

John’s legacy will be remembered through the sailors he inspired, the friendships he forged and the enduring contribution he made to the Squadron over many decades.

In accordance with the family’s wishes, his memorial and funeral will be private.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and all those who knew him.
