Midweek Winter Sailing in t-shirt and shorts, does it get any better?

A comment made from a boat crossing the finish line was “sailing was the winner today” and without doubt no truer word could be spoken about the afternoons sail. Where else could you be a few days into winter and still be in t-shirt and shorts (for some) and on one of the best playgrounds around? I’ll tell you where, Moreton Bay and a typical Brissy June afternoon!!

There was a little trepidation about the arrival of the northerly breeze, but right on que there it was, waiting for the early starters and filling in as the day went on. It started around 5-6 knots and at best went to 7. It did some crazy changes, especially up the top of the course and gave skippers and crew many things to think about.

Julette is one of the shortest courses we have, and a definite go to on days like this (no pun John). With the addition of the Green Island rec. mark (GIRM) its approx. 6nm. It was a beat from the start boat to the first mark (the Green Island western cardinal) and with only an hour left of the ebbing tide, the fleet quickly found themselves in close quarters. This where the breeze did the crazies. All over the place! It was a battle just to get to the next mark (Green Island Red) before heading south and GIRM. Boat speeds of 2-3 knots continued to keep the fleet together with no one running away. It’s amazing how voices carry so far and so clearly- hilarious!!! The run to Lockyer Light was uneventful and the last leg very sedate. Sailing in close quarters in little breeze requires skill. Well done everybody!!
