Wednesday Afternoon GO Sailing

April 04, 2024

WIND: NE9-12 KNOTS

TIDE: L@ 11:23

COURSE: DELTA

NUMBER OF BOATS: 35

What a very welcome relief it was, from the very average weather we have been experiencing recently, to be able to go out on to our Bay and have a beautiful afternoons sail.

The ambient temperature was approaching 30 degrees and it drew in a perfect nor’easter that I’m sure was enjoyed by all skippers and crew. With course Delta the breeze also provided a long beat all the way from the start boat, between Green and St. Helena Islands and up to the top mark, the St Helena floating red. A flooding tide was just something else that needed consideration. Watching the fleet on marine traffic, it looked very cosy. There are not many other keel boat regattas where you get to sail in close quarters and I must say everyone needs to be commended. It can be tricky at times and the knowledge of rules is a must. Don’t be ignorant! If you are unsure of a rule, please ask.

From the windward mark it was a restful run down to the GIRM (Green Island Rec Mark) and on to Lockyer Light. The GIRM has put a slight kink in what would be a straight leg to Lockyer and just mixes it up a bit more. I like it. A starboard turn at Lockyer was followed by a broad reach home where some very close finishers were recorded. The entire fleet in less than 9 minutes. Very cool!
