Wednesday Afternoon GO Sailing

November 16, 2023

WIND: N-NE / 10‐17kn

TIDE: L @ 17:17

COURSE: ECHO

NUMBER OF BOATS: 38

I have been watching the forecast for this day for nearly a week. It wasn’t looking very nice with averages of 23/24 knots and gusts of 27/29 knots. However as the week progressed and we got closer to our Wednesday, things settled down and for the day we were blessed with another fantastic afternoon of sailing.

Course Echo is approx. 12 miles as the crow flies, but with a fairly long beat the distance can blow out to 13/14. So from the start boat it was a windward beat to the Green Island western cardinal and on the nose all the way to the top mark at the floating red east of St Helena. It was great to watch as the fleet tacked away from the start line and spread left and right (for some too far left) in an attempt to make the most of the ebbing tide. Once at the top mark it was a steady run out to Hope Banks RM before a starboard turn saw skippers and crew enjoy a strong reach all the way to the finish.

It was fantastic to have Mick Jullyan and his son Griffin at the presentation to award their Father’s and Grandfather’s (one of the founders of WAGS) annual trophy “The Ross Jullyan Memorial Trophy”. This trophy was first presented in 1999 and it reminds us of what WAGS is all about why we love our Wednesdays.

All the very best to Mr Lucky (Rowan and Mark) in their racing ventures south and further afield around New Zealand.

Coming up: Race 2/7 of The Geoff Anderson Memorial Super Series  – the first Wednesday of December.
