WAGS REPORT

DATE:  3/9/2025

WIND:  ENE-NE-6-15 KNOTS

TIDE: L@11:56

COURSE: 20 C

NUMBER OF BOATS: 27

A number of skippers and crew stood in front of our start table and looked at the course beautifully displayed on the TV above. “Is that all? & that’s going to be easy“ were just a couple of the comments made. By the end of the day it was a very different story. What looked “easy” turned into a very tactful and challenging afternoon. There were only 3 legs on the course.1-start to Lockyer Light 2-Lockyer Light to Hope Banks Rec. Mark back and 3 back to Lockyer Light and home. Simple right? Not so much! The fleet started in 6 knots of breeze and had a true beat to Lockyer. On their way out to Hope the breeze went just enough north to turn it also into another beat all the way to the windward mark. There was also need for some thought about the flood tide and as we all know, out at Hope Banks it can run up to 5 knots. The fleet worked differing angles on the way to Hope Banks where some jagged a lift and some used the tide. Very interesting to watch!

A starboard turn at Hope and an increase to 10-12 knots in wind speed brought the fleet home on a running reach all the way to the finish line set just outside the harbour entrance. Some very close finishers being the norm for Wags. What looked like another drifter, based on the day’s forecast, turned into a cracker of a day.  Awesome!!!
