Wind: N-NNE-9-12 KNOTS
Tide: NE-8-12 Knots
Course: 23B
Number of Boats: 43
For the first time this year used a course that took us north of Green Island into some very familiar waters. The choice was also influenced by the return of a couple of recreational bouys that have been MIA over the past month. I don’t know about you, but I think that the passage between Green and St. Helena is one of the prettiest in the bay. The change of water colour, the distant city skyline, the Sandhills, marine life and knowing that home isn’t far away floats my boat.
So the start line was set up for a windward beat towards the first mark, the Green Island western cardinal, and remained so all the way to the top mark, the St. Helena floating red. There were a few boats that started on a starboard tack and quickly went over to a port tack, probably to get out into some clear air. There are around 28 boats that start in a spread of 13 minutes making things rather busy. The breeze was fantastic all afternoon, a couple of flicks here and there but consistent at around 40 degrees.
Once around the top mark it was a very cooling run down to the Green Island Rec. Mark where again things got very busy ( maybe some traffic lights required????) but everyone made it around safely before heading back between Green and St. Helena on another run before turning for the finish boat waiting south of the harbour entrance. The very condensed fleet giving the crew on the finish boat writers cramp. Great arvo, great fleet!!
