A beautiful day for testing!
Before I tell of the afternoons events, I would just like to thank skippers and crew for embracing WhatsApp. It has and will be a very important form of communication for Wags and all that happens within RQ sailing. Not only do you get a daily briefing, you get the start sheet, after it is completed so all are able to see all start times and who you can abuse for being at the wrong place at the wrong time—helpful!! If you are looking to join, there is a QR code at the start table every week.
So our Wednesday sail was testing. A beautiful, but light, nor’easter greeted a big fleet at the start and varied with quick shifts and changes in pressure. A windward leg from the start line all the way between Green and St. Helena Islands and up to the St. Helena floating red, saw many of these shifts, giving skippers and crew a bit think about. Once around the top mark, keeping it to starboard, it was a slow run against the ebbing tide down to the Green Island Rec. Mark where for some of the latter starters must of felt so slow in the fading breeze. Another starboard rounding and it was back between Green and St. Helena to the western cardinal. As the majority of the fleet approached the last mark, the breeze went very quiet. The great thing was there was still a bit of breeze for the back half of the fleet and suddenly the last mark became very busy. Anyone of 30 boats could have won. Patience being a necessity in situations like this and trying to be in a spot with the expected clear breeze was the challenge. Then a 12 knot blast pushed everyone home to the finish boat and created havoc for the scribers. 11 seconds for the first three in the multi’s and under 10 mins for mono fleet. Awesome!!!!
