WAGS REPORT

DATE:  25/3/2026

WIND:  E-ESE-8-11 Knots

TIDE: H@ 14:20—1.61M

COURSE: 18 C

NUMBER OF BOATS: 44

There was a major panic in the start boat, on the way to out of the harbour and on our way to the intended start line. The problem—- there was way more breeze than forecast and the chosen course was toooooo short. A circumnavigation of Green? Thinking, thinking, thinking?? Let’s check out the live wind around the bay–genius! Out at Hope it showed gusts of 8 from the SE, Banana Banks saw SE under 5 and Inner Beacon had E under 5. Hmmm, we’ll stick with the course chosen and make the most of what we have. As it turned out the breeze hovered around Green Island all arvo, nowhere else in the bay, and remained consistent between 8 and 11 knots. So a change to the final leg by setting the finish line as far north as practically possible was good choice.

The high tide was due at 14:20. The start line was just outside Aquatic Paradise so the first leg to the Green Island western cardinal, on a broad reach, was flat and quick. Little did the fleet know that this was not going to be the only time they saw this mark for the afternoon. A starboard turn at the cardinal and the next leg became the beat as the fleet headed east. The breeze shifted a little and varied E -ESE and gave skippers and crew something to think about on their way to the Green Island rec. mark. Some boats not laying this mark and requiring a tack back east.  The breeze fluctuated, according to the chat in the bar afterwards, anything up to 20 degrees. Once past GERM it was a running reach to Lockyer Light where the fleet was informed the position of the finish line. It was just west of the Green Island western cardinal making the last leg a nice reach instead of a dead run if it had of been if set just outside the leads. What could have been a disastrous afternoon turned into a cracker. Another great sail!
