TIDE: L@15:47-0.47M

NUMBER OF BOATS: 39

The word evolve is a verb meaning to develop or change gradually, often moving from a simpler to a more complex, advanced state. It also describes just how far Wags coursers have changed in the years I have been involved, in particular, the options in course choices. 1 Charlie used to be described as “good old course A” and was only one of three that was used for our afternoon’s sail. The other two were the reverse of course A, course B, and if the first boat was still in sight when the last boat started, a short course was called via CH 72, and course C with a circumnavigation of Green Island the only option. Now, over the years with “evolvement” we have “The RQYS Yacht Racing Course Book” and the choices are mind-blowing.

So “good old course A” (now 1 Charlie) was a cracker and perfect for another great afternoon’s sail. A broad reach from the start line to the Green Island western cardinal was a welcome change from the many windward starts recently. The ebb tide made sure it was a quick leg and it carried the fleet between Green and St. Helena Islands before becoming a different issue on a lovely beat all the way to the Hope Banks Rec. mark. I keep saying it “tide, tide, tide”. A starboard rounding at Hope and the fleet started to compress, as it should, and all enjoyed the run home to the finish line set just outside the harbour entrance. Awesome arvo!!!
