Ashlee and Brayden Daunt are two of RQYS’ home grown 2028 LA Olympic Games hopefuls in the 470 class. The talented sibling duo live locally to the Squadron and nurtured their love of sailing through our RQYS Youth ‘Learn to Sail’ program. We’ve been so lucky to watch these two grow into the exceptional sailors they are. Ashlee has provided us with the below recap of their 2024 sailing year and looking forward to 2025.

2024… what a year for @AUS 33__ ! We started the year off with our first season in Europe to capping off the year finishing with some great results at Sail Melbourne (4th) and Sail Sydney (2nd).

Overall, we continue to be happy with our progress and achievements relative to our long-term vision for our campaign to LA 2028. After our hard work throughout 2024, we are finally putting together races we are incredibly proud of – with great overall speed and consistent manoeuvres. Leading into Nationals we are working on the goal of increasing the consistency of performances race by race.

Some of our major focus areas for development include our bottom mark roundings, where we lost at least 5 points across both regattas, and our speed off the start line which needs to be refined so we can optimise the first upwind of a race. Leading into our next event, the 470 National Titles, we have 9 training sessions at home before we head down South to start ticking off the checklist.

Being that Nationals is at Woollahra Sailing Club, the same venue as Sail Sydney, this event will be a perfect opportunity to narrow in on the specific areas we need to improve ahead of our 2025 European season.

Our results:

  • Sail Melbourne – 4 out of 9 boats
  • Sail Sydney – 2 out of 11 boats
