RQYC Downunder Pro 2023

February 05, 2026

Over the last few weeks, I have been lucky enough to train for and compete in the
Australian National Championships in the iQ Foil. To begin my trip, gratefully supported by RQYS, I travelled to Fremantle Sailing Club along with the rest of the Australian iQ Foil Squad members for the start of the new year. There, faced with good breeze almost every day, I worked on my techniques for reaching and downwinds, achieving personalbest speeds of up to 55kph.

With a competitive squad and a lot of international experience under our belts, this
training always proves to be vigorous and enjoyable. As always, I was able to learn a lot from this time, including the various ways to attempt removing seaweed from my foils. Furthermore, it was wonderful to be able to train alongside the impressive Sail GP boats, which were also in Fremantle in preparation for their first event of the 2026 season.

From there, the squad moved to Wangi Wangi in Lake Macquarie, NSW. Arriving in a sheer downpour, and predictions not looking much better, it is a pleasant surprise to be able to say we managed to get all 16 races of the series by the end of the regatta.
We were also lucky enough to experience thehospitality and support of the Wangi WangiSailing Club members and community. The attached picture is part of a variety taken by Spears Point local Paul, printed out by him and distributed amongst the sailors.

Faced with all kinds of wind, ranging from galeforce upwind racing with a few shark spottings,to seaweed-ridden sprint races, the regatta tested all skill sets. Furthermore, with one of thedays totalling an unexpected 8 races, the eventmost definitely tested fitness and endurance. Overall, I was happy to come away with a 4th
place, with key indicators of progressthroughout the year.

Largely, I am very proud to represent the Squadron at events such as these, and am
tremendously grateful for the support RQYS provides me. With a positive start to the
year, I look forward to being able to train at home in the upcoming weeks before heading over to Europe in the hopes of seeing my progress reflected internationally.
