Rory Meehan is a name that is steadily rising in the Australian sailing community.
At just 17, Rory has already achieved remarkable milestones, showcasing his potential to become a leading figure in the sport.
A Year of Impressive Results
In the past 12 months, Rory has demonstrated his prowess on the international stage, competing in some of the most prestigious sailing events. His top three results speak volumes about his dedication and skill:
- IQFoil Youth & Junior European Championships (Embrun, France): Rory secured an impressive 5th place in this highly competitive international regatta held in July 2024. Competing against the best youth sailors from around the world, this achievement marked a significant milestone in his sailing career.
- Princess Sofia Regatta (Palma, Spain): In March 2024, Rory competed in his first International Olympic class regatta at the renowned Princess Sofia Regatta. He placed 62nd overall, with a remarkable 2nd place finish among Australian competitors. This performance underscored his ability to compete at the highest level.
- Sail Sydney and Oceanic Championship (Georges River, NSW): Back in December 2023, Rory placed 3rd in the Oceanic Championships and World Championship Qualifier event. This was his debut in the Olympic class, and he immediately established himself as a formidable contender.
Goals and Aspirations
Rory’s journey has been fueled by ambitious goals and a relentless pursuit of excellence. In 2023, he set his sights on competing in the iQFOiL Youth & Junior European Championships, aiming to finish in the top 20. His hard work paid off as he not only met this goal but exceeded it, finishing 18th among 145 competitors in his first international regatta in the U19 men’s category.
Following this success, Rory transitioned from the youth board to the adult board, determined to make his mark in the Olympic class. His performances at Sail Sydney, Sail Melbourne (where he placed 4th), and the Queensland State Championship (2nd place) are testaments to his rapid progress and adaptability.
Looking ahead to 2024, Rory’s goals are even more ambitious:
- Selection as a Categorised QAS Athlete: Rory aims to be recognized as a categorised athlete by the Queensland Academy of Sport, a testament to his growing reputation in the sailing community.
- Australian Sailing Pathway Team: He is also striving to be selected in the Australian Sailing Pathway Team – Developing, which would position him for further success and development in the sport.
- Competing at the Highest Level: Rory is gearing up to compete in more international regattas, including his return to the Princess Sofia Regatta and the iQFOiL & Junior European Championships. His ultimate dream? To compete at the Olympic level, with his sights set on the 2028 Los Angeles and 2032 Brisbane Games.

Rory Meehan’s journey is one of determination, hard work, and a clear vision for the future. With his recent accomplishments and future goals, he is poised to become one of the leading figures in Australian sailing.
