This week RQYS hosted a group of single-handed OK dinghy sailors battling the conditions of Waterloo Bay Chop for the National OK Dinghy Championships, a three-day event with 90 boats. Showcasing exceptional race management and volunteers once again, RQYS race management hosted the largest OK Dinghy fleet to assemble in Australia thanks to the our Overseas and Southern guests, joining us to prepare for the OK Dinghy Worlds next week.

Notably, our junior sailors, including Jordon Barney, Jackson Black, and Nelson Morse, demonstrated outstanding skills amongst a strong fleet of world-class sailors in near-perfect conditions. RQYS Head Coach Adrian Finglas was so excited to see our youth competing at the top of the fleet, and is extremely proud to see the emergence of talented young sailors within the club. This could be indicative of a strong junior sailing program at RQYS, such achievements often speak to the dedication of both the sailors and their coaches, as well as the supportive environment provided by the Squadron.

RQYS VXone champion Brett Whitbread left his teammates at home, sailed an impressive event, finishing 5th overall. Important to note that Brett only started sailing this class a mere six weeks ago, though rumour has it he equipped himself with the very best gear for the job.

RQYS was proudly on display with a strong team of 11 member’s showcasing the depth of talent within our ranks.

A HUGE congratulations to David Clark from CYCA emerging victorious, claiming the Australian Championship followed by Steve McDowell (WBBC) in second and Roger Blasse (BRYC) taking third.

Containers from Europe has been causing logistical challenges with sailors resorting to using local boats. As the World Championship registration unfolds, the anticipation builds for the 10-race series starting on Monday 26 February. International sailors will add an exciting global flavour, making it a remarkable celebration of OK Dinghy sailing at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, lets hope those boats make it through customs ASAP.

As we celebrate the success of the National Championships, teams will take a break to prepare for the Tan Lines OK Dinghy World Championship, starting on Sunday. This championship is set to be the largest international OK Dinghy fleet ever assembled in Australia.
