History in the Making 

In an epic display of skill and determination, over 30 RQYS Laser members embarked on a journey to Adelaide for the Laser Nationals in January 2024, turning the event into a historic moment for our club and the entire Queensland sailing community.

The team’s enthusiasm was palpable as they embraced the challenging conditions of the Gulf of St Vincent – strong winds, towering waves, and the pristine waters that set the stage for a truly memorable regatta.

The Laser Nationals, a crucial Olympic test event, attracted over 200 sailors from across the globe, making it a battleground for the best in the world. RQYS youth sailors emerged as true stars, dominating various age group divisions and stealing the spotlight with their exceptional skills.

Australia’s very own Olympic gold Medallist Matt Wearn was so consistent to take the Win in the men’s Gold Fleet.

Under the expert guidance of RQYS Head Coach Adrian Finglas, our young sailors thrived in the challenging wind conditions. Adrian’s strategic focus on nutrition played a pivotal role, ensuring that every athlete had the energy needed to navigate the formidable waves each day.

In a groundbreaking moment for Queensland, our RQYS youth sailors stole the show securing victory in the ILCA (Laser) Class Teams trophy, a coveted honor that had previously eluded the state. The exceptional performances across various divisions laid the foundation for RQYS to claim the prestigious team event, marking a historic triumph for our Club.

From the Masters Divisions to the juniors, RQYS sailors showcased their prowess, with our under 16 sailors achieving unprecedented success. Dominating the results, they claimed the top three positions in both the boys and girls under 16 fleets, underscoring the depth of talent and commitment within the RQYS sailing community.

The Laser Nationals in Adelaide will be etched in history as a defining moment for RQYS, where our sailors not only competed but excelled at the highest level. The legacy of this remarkable achievement will undoubtedly inspire future generations of sailors and solidify RQYS’s position as a powerhouse in the world of competitive sailing.
