The RQYS 29er squad’s hard work in preparation for the 29er Nationals in Perth has paid off. Four QLD teams competed in the Nationals with three from RQYS.

Hosting its events along the scenic Swan River, the South of Perth Yacht Club proved to be an impeccable venue for the Nationals. The Fremantle Doctor, a consistent southwesterly wind of 15-20 knots, made a timely appearance for four out of five days, creating exhilarating sailing conditions. On the fifth day, however, a challenging Easterly wind added a twist to the competition.

Around midday, the arrival of the Fremantle Doctor transformed the breeze from the east into a robust southwesterly, resulting in flat water conditions on the Swan River—an ideal setting for thrilling sailing experiences.

The Nationals comprised 15 races, skillfully managed by a reliable and efficient race committee that delivered three races per day. Remarkably, the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS) teams achieved notable success:

• Ayesha & Elysia Albury secured the title of Female National Champions, finishing 8th overall.
• Isabel Houston & Iris Beebe claimed the Second Female National Champions title, securing 10th place overall.
• Lucas Patrick and Luke Rogers earned the Second Open National Champion title, finishing 2nd overall.

The coveted Overall National Champions title went to Axle and Jamie from Western Australia, both members of the Institute of Sport in WA and seasoned 29er competitors. Their consistency over the five days, combined with their extensive local knowledge, outmatched the efforts of teams from other states.

Despite Lucas and Luke’s impressive performance with 5 heat wins and 2 second-place finishes, it wasn’t enough to clinch the National Title. However, their dedicated heavy wind training after the Weymouth Worlds in July paid off, showcasing significant boat handling improvements and securing several victories in the challenging 15-20 knot conditions.

All-female teams demonstrated exceptional high-wind boat handling skills, consistently achieving top 5 finishes throughout the Nationals. The event also provided an opportunity for crews to indulge in sightseeing, complemented by the WA 9ers’ enjoyable social gatherings.
