Waszp Foiling QLD State Championships

November 02, 2023

Last weekend, RQYS hosted the exciting, Waszps Class foiling dinghies State Championships. The regatta promised thrilling action and, indeed, it delivered with variable conditions that tested the skills of the 10 entries.

Saturday kicked off with a gusty challenge, as strong winds & heavy chop filled the course area, forcing the Waszps to remain ashore until the afternoon. The conditions eased just enough in the afternoon for the race committee to squeeze in three races which were a true test of the sailors’ abilities, demanding both precision and control.

The following day brought a change in weather conditions. The tempestuous winds of Saturday were replaced by a gentler yet still testing breeze on Sunday. This allowed the race committee to complete the schedule four races for the day. The sailors could finally unleash their full potential in the calmer waters and the competition became even more intense.

As the final race concluded, the overall results were nothing short of extraordinary. The competition had been so close that it required a tiebreak on countback to determine the ultimate victor. In the end, it was Nicholas Dunne, sailing “The Sting,” who clinched the coveted overall first place. His consistent performance and strategic decisions throughout the regatta earned him the championship title. Louis Tilly, aboard “Boogie Wonderland,” put up a valiant effort and secured second place, showcasing his incredible skills on the water. Meanwhile, Will Troop, with his vessel “No Limits,” captured the third spot on the podium, rounding out the top three finishers. It was a true testament to the competitors’ dedication and proficiency.
