Words by Jimmy Doherty

Born in Cloncurry and moved to Stonehenge, QLD. Grew up cattle farming where he became a champion bull rider.

Then in 2006 he moved to Brisbane, discovered Moreton Bay and sailing. He joined the Squadron in that year, bought a yacht and moved on board. His “seachange” came earlier than most.

He fell in love with racing and got heavily involved with doing RQ’s Keppel Race, several Gladstones and Hammo Race Week. Then in 2011 he conquered one of the “Everests” of ocean racing, competing in the Sydney to Hobart in his own boat “Sweetheart”. He also achieved 1st place in the shorthanded division of the Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Race.

He was a common sight around the Squadron, well known for his willingness to help others at any time.

Following a whirlwind romance with his partner Sharon, he moved with her to Darwin. After a long illness, he checked out and signed on as crew on the large racing yacht in the sky on Wednesday morning. He is survived by his partner Sharon.

Sail on mate. May the wind always be abaft the beam. You will be missed, gone but not forgotten.

There will be a gathering to celebrate Laurence’s life at a time to be announced.
