Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Hosts World-Class Youth Regatta and Coaching Clinic

The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS) once again delivered a world-class Youth Regatta and Coaching Clinic last week, attracting young sailors and their families from as far away as Hong Kong. Participants also traveled from across Australia, including Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, and Far North Queensland, eager to experience the unseasonal, very strong winds that characterised this year’s event.

The Coaching Clinic featured specialist coaches who provided top-tier training and insights. Notably, Harry Moreton, a two-time 29er World Champion, was a significant draw for double-handed skiff sailors. The laser group benefited from the expertise of Brett Beyer, a four-time Olympic coach, and Mitch Kennedy the Queensland Academy of Sport Head Coach and RQYS Head Coach Adrian Finglas. Their guidance proved invaluable for the young sailors.

The regatta commenced under challenging conditions, with an Arctic blast bringing very strong winds and rain that persisted for three days. Racecourses recorded winds exceeding 28 knots on multiple occasions. It was a testament to the skill and experience of the race management team that they were able to safely conduct the races for the 115 young sailors participating.

With the Brisbane Olympics on the horizon, the timing of the Gill Youth event is crucial for the development of young sailors. The regatta provides an opportunity for local champions to gain experience and prepare for international competition as foreign teams begin training at RQYS.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the volunteers and parents whose support and dedication made this regatta possible. Their contributions ensured the event’s success and the safety of all participants.
