NUMBER OF BOATS: 36

What a fantastic way to welcome the New Year with a great fleet enjoying a very consistent breeze and in the end one of the most compact finishers I can remember. At one stage 14 boats came over the line in 45 seconds. A little challenging for the finish boat crew!!!

The sou’easter was looking to be very constant all afternoon so a trip down to the Peel Rec. Mark was definitely on the cards. The start line was set just south and outside the harbour entrance and provided a nice leg to Hybers Light. The tide had just peaked and was starting to ebb so there needed to be some thought on where your tack was made on the beat to the Rec Mark.  Some went deep and east and others turned immediately in an attempt to find some flat water. I believe the winners went deep. The beat to the Rec. Mark saw 20+ knots across decks but it was well handled by all. A port rounding at the mark was followed by a quick dead run to the Hope Banks Rec. Mark before another port turn provided the fastest leg of the day home towards Lockyer Light and on to the finish boat set just where the fleet left it. Awesome arvo!!!!

WIND:  SE-15-25+knots

TIDE: L@12:30-0.92M

COURSE: ORIGIONALLY SET AS 25A. CHANGED BEFORE THE START TO 4B

NUMBER OF BOATS: 32 ENTERED  26 STARTED

I’ve always said that we’re not about breaking boat or especially people. Hence our 25-knot wind limit. Sitting on the start line, or should I say bouncing on the start line, the wind reached a gust of 29 knots, and I was about to abandon the afternoons activities. That’s when I saw many Wags boats coming out of the harbour with reduced sails and very prepared for some stronger winds. Hmmm. The wind seemed to settle down to below 25 knots, and it felt a pity to send every one home. I was very close! After much consideration, I felt that some experience in these conditions would be educational, so with a course change to take any windward leg out with reaching and running a priory, it would definitely be safer than the original course selection. So via CH 72, the Wags WhatsApp and a board displayed from the start boat everyone who intended to sail got the message. (Skippers choice).

A blast from the start boat in a sou’easter to Lockyer Light and out to Hope Banks Rec. Mark was where the most of the wind would be experienced. However once around Hope the run back past Lockyer and to the finish was a breeze (ha ha no pun intended).  I am pleased to say that everyone got home with only one minor breakage. A very well done to all!!!
