Sailing in Memory: A Day of Tribute and Triumph on Course Echo

Thankfully we don’t have many Wednesdays like this one. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as 8 bells were rung and we watched a video of our Wags gentlemanly statesman Ted Reye receiving his first place prize early last year. It was wonderful to hear his voice, watch his joy and share in the amazing way he talked about the comradery he always felt on a Wednesday afternoon. He was a fine example of a human and we were all blessed to know him. Thank you Ted.

Earlier in the day we had a fantastic sail!! The sou’easter was kind and never went above 15 knots. Course Echo gives the opportunity to have a couple of longer legs and shake the wrinkles out of the sails. A very nice running reach from the start boat to the Green Island western cardinal, between Green and St. Helena, and all the way up to the floating red, was enjoyed by everyone. Keeping the mark to starboard, the work to Hope Banks RM began. As stated the breeze was kind, the water flat, and it was probably one of the nicest beats we’ve had all year. A starboard turn at the mark and fleet began to compress, just like it’s supposed to do, and by the time Lockyer light came up they were 6 wide running for the finish line. Awesome to watch WhiteBirds (74 foot) working their way through the fleet to finish only seconds away from the front runners. 16 seconds for 2nd to 6th. Very well done to all.
