So far this week we have experienced the first two – Sunday and Wednesday evenings – ‘proper’ storms of the 2024-25 Summer, following three ‘practice run’ weather events in the weeks prior. These are a timely reminder to refocus our attention to, and preparations for, the early onset of what could be a more active than usual storm season.

Early Monday morning, one of our live-aboard members encountered one of ‘our’ Masked Lapwing Plover chicks fluttering face-down in obvious distress in a stormwater pond by the Eastern Beach fence, with the affected parents helplessly standing by. Despite best efforts to dry out, secure and comfort the adolescent bird – ably assisted by Tony, our groundsman – the poor creature succumbed to its storm injuries.

Wednesday evening’s storm front came near to human tragedy but with – only just – a happier outcome. A long-time Squadron Member had sought sanctuary in their catamaran by St Helena Island as the storm front approached – but to no avail. With wind gusts recorded at 66 knots and ground tackle failing, they had no choice but to make the dash for shelter in the harbour after the tail of the storm squalls. A flurry of ‘sub-PAN-level’ calls and messages to X-row neighbours Matt (MV Mistress) and Andrew (SV Katsumi) saw Neil safely home and alongside the end of X-row.

These stories remind us of why our RQYS community is so special in looking out for each other – indeed, everyone.
