The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS) Team sailors delivered an outstanding performance at the prestigious Sail Sydney regatta, securing multiple podium finishes and solidifying their reputation as a force to be reckoned with in Australian sailing.
The event, held on Sydney Harbour, attracted elite sailors from across the country and beyond, with testing conditions ranging from light breezes to challenging gusts. RQYS sailors rose to the occasion, demonstrating skill, strategy, and resilience across a range of classes.
Leading the charge for the Squadron was Henry Piggott, Frances Beebe and Caterina Meyer in the ILCA 6 (Laser Radial) fleet. Displaying impressive consistency throughout the series, Henry claimed second place in the Open ILCA 6 division, Frances and Caterina claimed 2nd and 3rd place in the ILCA 6 Women’s division.
In the ILCA 4 class RQYS team sailors also dominated the score board over the week with Ruby Carter finishing in 3rd position and Wilbur Bright a very close 4th position.
In the 49er class, RQYS had 2 teams: Liam Miller with Will Bridge and Luke Rodgers with Kris Bilston.
Liam and Will had a victory in heat 4 showing the national teams our RQYS sailors are on the rise. Recently Luke and Kris have formed their team and showed the fleet their transom on several occasions. Liam and Will finished 5th overall and Luke and Kris one boat behind in 6th.
The success continued in the IQ foil Men’s fleet, where RQYS’ rising stars showcased their potential. Rory Meehan secured two podium finishes ahead of Olympic Silver Medallist Grae Morris – earning him praise for his composure and decision-making in tricky conditions.
RQYS Head Coach Adrian Finglas commended the team’s efforts:
“This was a fantastic regatta for all our sailors. Sail Sydney is always a tough competition with some of Australia’s best talent on display, and I’m incredibly proud of the hard work and determination our athletes showed this week. We are starting to get a buzz at the Squadron about our 2032 Olympic chances.”
Sail Sydney is considered one of the premier events on the Australian sailing calendar, providing critical experience ahead of the upcoming national and international competitions. The success of RQYS sailors highlights the strength of the squadron’s training programs and its role in developing Australia’s future champions.
With this momentum, the RQYS team will now turn their focus to upcoming regattas, including the Australian ILCA and Optimist Nationals, to be held at the Squadron in January. Please follow all our team members on the link below.
