Adelaide ILCA Master Worlds 2024: Sailing Legends Rise

The azure waters of Adelaide, Australia, played host to the 2024 ILCA Master Worlds, a regatta that brought together seasoned sailors from around the globe. Against the backdrop of sun-kissed waves and strong sea breezes nine new ILCA World Champions emerged, etching their names into sailing history.
The Masters Division: Battle of Experience
ILCA 7 Masters: Brendan Casey’s Resurgence
In the fiercely competitive ILCA 7 Masters division, RQYS sailor Brendan Casey staged a remarkable comeback. His mastery of wind and sail propelled him to the top spot, leaving competitors in his wake. David Whait (Australia) and Scott Leith (New Zealand) secured second and third places, respectively. Brendan only recently returned to sailing and is our very own Olympic Finn representative from the 2012 London Games.
ILCA 6 Masters: Simon Small’s Triumph
In the ILCA 6 Masters category, RQYS Simon Small returned to the sport after a hiatus. His laser-focused determination paid off as he claimed the championship. Phil Wild (New Zealand) and Jon Emmett (Great Britain) joined him on the podium, their sails billowing with pride. This is Simons second ILCA world championship as he won the Youth World ILCA titles in the 90’s.
The ILCA 7 Great Grand Masters fleet witnessed a masterclass by Steve Gunther (Australia). His sailboat danced with the wind, winning nine out of twelve races. Tim Law (Great Britain) and Michael Wilson (Australia) completed the podium, their passion for sailing undimmed.
RQYS: A ILCA Sailing Powerhouse
Back at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS), sailors continued their quest for excellence. From the South Pacific Laser Masters to the 2024 Laser Nationals, RQYS sailors left their mark. Notably, the under-16 sailors dominated, proving that the future of sailing is in safe hands at RQYS.
