From the Chairman of the Navigation Committee

By James Tapp, Chairman, RQYS Cruising and Navigation Committee

What a weekend for the Squadron! A fleet of 36 boats once again competed in the annual Goodwill Cup Navigation event for 2025.  Our 20 RQYS crews delivered a fantastic performance, taking out both the Traditional and GPS divisions and securing the Overall Club Championship with a commanding 44 points to Southport Yacht Club’s 71.

In the GPS Division, Commodore Curtis Skinner on Black Betty led from the front, taking the win with an exceptional 3 points. An outstanding display of precision and skill.

The Traditional Division came right down to the wire, with Craig Black on Odyssey edging out yours truly on Olive J on countback after both finished on 28 points, just 0.1 of a second separating us!

The Goodwill Cup, which we were competing for, holds a special place in our sailing calendar. It is the longest-running club regatta, having first started in 1933, and has been contested as an interclub event against Southport Yacht Club since 1962. This historic rivalry makes every point and every second on the water all the more exciting.

There was also tremendous comradery and support from our friends at Southport Yacht Club, especially their Vice Commodore, Justin Sinnamon, whose assistance on the day was greatly appreciated and helped make the event a great success.

A massive thank you goes to our RQYS Cruising and Navigation Committee and all the Squadron staff for their dedication and effort. Special thanks to our CEO, Karen Baldwin, for pulling everything together in such a professional and seamless manner, and to Rear Commodore Chris Land for his tireless behind-the-scenes work in planning, organising, and scoring the event. His commitment ensured everything ran perfectly.

Congratulations again to all involved on the water and behind the scenes. What a fantastic result for the Squadron!
