WAGS Report – 33 Boats on the Start Line

A solid fleet of 33 boats turned out for this week’s WAGS, sailing the familiar “A” course that everyone knows so well. Although forecasts suggested a steady SSE breeze up to 15 knots, the conditions didn’t quite deliver, leaving competitors with a good, honest beat out to the Hope Banks recreational mark.

It was fascinating to follow the differing tactics on the A.I.S. Some skippers opted for the long board further south, while others chose a series of shorter tacks to work their way to the mark. As the afternoon wore on, the breeze gradually softened, giving the early starters a noticeable advantage on the return leg.

Next week’s race will be sailed for the Ross Jullyan Memorial Trophy — a highlight on the WAGS calendar and one not to be missed.
