Explore Moreton Bay with the Powerboat Cruising Group!
Cruising in company is an exhilarating way to connect with like-minded individuals while navigating our picturesque waterways. The Powerboat Cruising Group embarks on regular journeys to stunning destinations around Moreton Bay and beyond. Whether you’re a seasoned boater or a novice, our cruise events, scheduled throughout the year, promise enjoyment for the entire family.
A Brief History
The Powerboat Cruising Group emerged in response to the increasing interest from couples and families who embraced power boating and sought camaraderie on the water. The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron’s Power Boat section caters for a range of boating and on water interests.
Exciting Events
Our group orchestrates captivating two-, three- or four-day cruise events throughout Moreton Bay and south to the Gold Coast on a monthly basis. These events cater to families and individuals alike. Past adventures have also included extended coastal trips to Lady Musgrave, The Great Sandy Straits, Keppel Bay and beyond. Whether it’s a local excursion or a two-week extended cruise, you’re welcome to join us for any part of these memorable journeys.
If you are looking for a challenge, the RQYS Cruising & Navigation Committee conducts several competitive navigation events each year, providing a true test of your navigation skills:
Goodwill Cup (established 1962)
Myora Cup (established 1949)
Past Commodores’ Cup
Night Raid Navigation Event
The first three events attract points towards the annual Squadron Champion award and other perpetual trophies. These events are also major social occasions, with the Goodwill and Myora Cups each spread over a weekend, culminating with breakfast and presentations on the Sunday morning at RQYS Canaipa, our down-the Bay facility.
The other events are held in close proximity to the Squadron, allowing for a return to the Clubhouse for lunch and prize-giving. There are two classes of competition, one using modern-day GPS and the other using traditional navigation methods of dead-reckoning. Navigation events involve travelling over a set course at a nominated speed over ground – hence tidal and weather conditions have to be reckoned with to maintain this speed and to reach the finish at the correct time – so it isn’t about how fast you get there, instead how close you are to your predicted time. Not as easy as it sounds!
