Unfortunately, the weather gods were not shining on us again, with the April cruise cancelled and, whilst the May cruise was not officially cancelled, it was a wash-out and cruise activities were restricted to shoreside RQYS. Better fortune attended the Bush Poetry Cruise in June, started off on Friday evening with Kris and Ian Wright’s talk, complete with pictures and video of their recent trip to the Antarctic. At Canaipa the assembled group was treated to a wide range of poetry from the classical and serious to the hilarious and funny; all poems were of excellent quality, well presented and had been well-rehearsed by the presenters. Some of the group decided to stay an extra day and enjoy the facilities of the island’s bowls club. The Christmas in July combined Sail Cruising and Powerboat Cruise was the first official RQYS event (aside from the Opening Day) to be held in the newly established Canaipa Longhouse. Lights were hung, tables were decorated, and two cruise captains took the opportunity to have a ‘light-sabre contest’ with the spare table-cover paper rolls, as 47 Members and their guests enjoyed the complimentary grazing platters for Sundowners. Of course, it would not be Christmas in July without the customary “Bad Santa”. Sunday saw a nice bright sunny morning with cruisers enjoying the egg-and-bacon rolls provided by Canaipa catering whilst sitting in the sun of the Longhouse decking area. August’s cruise saw the fleet head down to Canaipa after much discussion on the Friday briefing, where wind direction and strength was the main topic, making the original destination of Peel Island a ‘no-go.’ Cruise Captains on “Curlew” made a detour to Deanbilla on the way down before joining the rest of the cruisers for an enjoyable evening in the Longhouse. The year concluded with a further couple of Bay cruises followed by the December joint Power and Sail Christmas bash in the RQYS Flags Room.
