RQYS MAINSHEET 2024

Goodwill Cup This navigation event is held annually on the first weekend in November — and 2024’s event marked the 63rd anniversary of the ‘friendly competition’ between the Squadron and Southport Yacht Club for the much-coveted trophy, with a fleet of 34 participating vessls, 22 from RQYS and 12 from SYC. The start location varies from year to year, in 2024 beginning at Myora Light and finishing at Blakesley’s Anchorage, to obtain some lee from ‘Straddie’ in the prevailing, inclement weather and blustery sou’easterlies. Changing conditions and currents proved to be very challenging for the competitors on the day. Most vessels then continued at cruise speed to Canaipa where the celebrations got into full swing between the Members of both clubs. Some stayed ashore for dinner by Canaipa Catering Company, others choosing to return to the comforts of their respective vessels for dinner. Next morning, Navigation Committee members and Volunteers prepared a sensational breakfast of fried eggs, sausages, bacon and toast. Commodore John Warlow and Chris Land announced the results of the top five vessels in Traditional and GPS along with the winning vessel’s navigator and top Handicap vessel all receiving a prize. The club with the lowest combined total from the top five GPS and top three Traditional vessels is the overall winner. RQYS achieved 33 points while SYC came in at 45, meaning our Squadron retains the Goodwill Trophy for another year! Traditional 1st: “Odyssey” • Craig Black GPS 1st: “Black Betty” • V/Cdre Skinner The Odyssey team achieved an amazing clean sweep of all three 2024 events in a sensational effort! This achievement netted them the 2024 Squadron Champion Trophy (Traditional), with P/Cdre Dennis Land taking home the GPS Trophy. We express great appreciation to our valued Volunteers and sponsors: Trymax Marine Electronics, Gold Coast City Marina, Dometic and The Yacht Sales Co.
