RQYS MAINSHEET 2024

Chris Land writes that the Powerboat Committee is responsible for organising and conducting three competitive navigation events and a non-competitive night-time navigation event throughout the season, and that 2024 saw increased participation by Squadron Members keen to test their electronic and paper-based skills! This year has seen another successful and enjoyable time for all the Members who attended one or more of the three RQYS navigation events held in 2024, with an increase in interest across the different membership demographics. So, what is a “navigation event”? In brief, it is a planned course defined by approximately 10—15 waypoints with the aim of being ‘on-time’ at each point throughout the course. The skipper advises a comfortable cruise speed for their vessel and is provided with a start time, based on the skipper’s nomination of either Traditional or GPS categories. Traditional: Prior to the event, the skipper and navigator compile a run-sheet of time calculations via a paper or electronic chart with reference to landmarks and beacons. On the day, using only a speed log through the water, depth sounder, timepiece, binoculars and hand-bearing compass, competitors navigate around the course. The use of GPS and ‘Speed over Ground’ electronics are not allowed! GPS: Prior to the event, the skipper and navigator determine a list of intermediate waypoints with ETA time calculations to the second. On the day, GPS and all associated navigation equipment is used with the aim of being on time from start to finish. Myora Cup This event is held annually on the first weekend in March, providing the weather doesn’t postpone the activity. This year, 25 vessels participated in the navigation event which started at Myora Light, then proceeded down the western side of the Banana Banks and finished at Blakesley’s anchorage. The fleet then casually cruised ‘around the corner’ into the safe haven of RQYS Canaipa where the festivities got into full swing. Commodore’s Drinks saw just on 100 people enjoy the camaraderie of old and new friends, relishing the picturesque grounds of Canaipa Point backdropped by the nearly-complete Longhouse. Power to practice navigation skills Could you take bearings and calculate tide and current offsets the ‘old-fashioned way’ if your screens went dark?
