RQYS MAINSHEET 2024

The Powerboat Cruising Group is exclusive to boating Full Members of the Squadron and regularly travels to many beautiful destinations around Moreton Bay and beyond, report Group Co-Chairs Jan Ralph and P/Cdre Ian Threlfall, with the combined Power and Sail Groups’ “Christmas in July” at RQYS Canaipa a regular calendar highlight! POWER CRUISERS: QUIET ACHIEVERS Up the River or ‘down the Bay’ reminds us of a particular book’s title which continues to resonate to this day ... Cruise events are organised for most months throughout the year, designed to be fun for the whole family. The group has more than 100 members — with power boats ranging in size from 8m to 20m+ and cruising speeds of six to 26 knots — but it’s not the size or the speed that matters; it’s the camaraderie shared before, during and afterwards! The group is always looking for new members so, whether you are new to boating or enjoy cruising in company, belonging to the Powerboat Cruising Group is a great way to explore our Bay and Southeast Queensland waters. Some of our 2024 activities included: July: Combined Power & Sail Cruising Groups’ Christmas in July at Canaipa On the Saturday afternoon everyone met ashore for sundowners, followed by a roast dinner and dessert. After dinner it was time for Bad Santa, which is always a lot of fun. The night continued with drinks around the firepit. Everyone met ashore again on Sunday morning for a cooked breakfast. August: Brisbane River cruise We all met at Hamilton Reach and travelled in single file up the river while answering a trivia quiz about the river along the way. Saturday night we enjoyed a dinner at the Carrington Boating Club. Sunday morning, we travelled back down the river and lunch was at Breakfast Creek Hotel. Other cruise destinations included: Russell and Macleay Islands Combo Something a bit different with a Saturday afternoon of barefoot bowls followed by dinner at Russell Island Bowls Club, then Sunday lunch at Macleay Island Bowls Club, before returning to Manly. Days Gutter — including lunch at the Gutter Bar, following the co-ordinated passage entry by the flotilla. A “Cheesy Canaipa Valentine’s Cruise” with ‘Best Wine & Cheese’ competition — about which, the less said the better! “Winter Sundowners Cruise” down to comfortable Blakesley’s anchorage on Straddie, just north of Canaipa.
