RQYS MAINSHEET 2024

It’s been just over two years since we lost our WAGS mate Geoff Anderson, lovingly known as ‘WOOMPA’. Consequently, the formerly-known Super Series, established in 2014 to reward the WAGS Mono and Multi champion, was in 2024 renamed the Geoff Anderson Memorial Super Series, as Paul and Nelly Bolton report. This year both divisions had deserving winners in Michael Easton on “Danseur” (Mono) and Wayne Bloomer on the amazing “Chill Pill” (Multi). Both recipients were presented their respective trophies at the 2024 Senior Presentation night — another wonderful RQYS event. We were also privileged to have John Taylor, one of the founders of the WAGS institution, sail a number of times throughout the year. Mid-year, John brought an original WAGS/RQYS burgee and did a very impromptu and informative talk about the burgee and his pride in WAGS: how it all started, and where it has come from to what it is today, with beautiful boats and very capable skippers and crew making it one of the largest, most competitive weekly fleets in our beautiful part of the world. And the current and two-time winner of the Tattersalls Cup, Duncan Hine (skipper of “Alive”), and his father Barry, made themselves available to many WAGS boats during 2024, with the quote of the year undoubtedly coming from Barry: “I taught him everything he knows”.… what gems of people to have in the WAGS Family fleet! In 2024, we lost our WAGS ‘elder statesman’ Ted Reye, who , at age 89 years 11 months, declined to clock over to the full 90. Ted maintained and skippered his beloved “Colombina” in WAGS for over 30 years. His presence has been and will be forever missed. n No job too small / Commercial diving available / Professional team Pre-race yacht cleaning: hull, keel, rudder and prop Props removed and replaced / Fully insured / ADAS-qualified Proudly supporting WAGS @ RQYS! adamthediver@bigpond.com 2024 WAGS conducted 45 51 scheduled Wednesdays #2 JESTER / Tony Love 42 / 45 #1 LADY’D’ / Rob Smith 44 / 45 Wednesdays 2024 52 WAGS scheduled 51 WAGS cancelled 6 … due weather Total entries 2024 1,560 S/Total MONOs 1,270 S/Total MULTIs 290 (incl. repeat entries) Typical fleet size 35 Largest fleet 62 Smallest fleet 16 (2024 medians) Typical boat length 11.9 Longest boat 22.5 Shortest 5.5 (in OA metres)
