History of Old Buffers
During 2018, the Squadron’s History Committee deliberated on the need for a get together of older members with the concept of re-igniting friendship and providing a base for sailors to re-connect. After consultation and agreement from the Commodore of the day, now P/Cdr Mark Gallagher, the first “old Buffers” was held in October 2018 with some eleven members attending the morning tea.
Under convener Life Member, Grant Somerville, representations were made including members staying for lunch at the Squadron, carers being included for those who requiring them, an occasional interesting speaker – Peter Cavill gave a history of P/Cdr Greg Cavill’s vessels and more recently the unveiling of the refurbished doors of our old clubhouse, the Greg Cavill Building – the upgrade courtesy of P/Cdr Wal Bishop who had donated the original doors.
Now approaching three years since inception, last meeting saw forty attend with nineteen staying for lunch, enjoying the company and re-telling some wonderful sailing yarns.
It may not be long before some readers qualify as “Old Buffers” – a lengthy club membership (many are approaching fifty years), some tall stories of past boating and an ability to enjoy the company of old mates – enquire at the office.
On behalf of the History Committee, Past Commodores Richard Crooke and Mark Gallagher and Life Members Michael Burke, Grant Somerville and Dugald Henderson.
