The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron has a proud tradition of developing young sailors and offering opportunities to juniors whatever the extent of their ambitions – be it as Olympic hopeful or purely for fun and recreation.
The Squadron has continued to support this long-term commitment to the future of the sport with a focus to increase participation of juniors and guide them along Sailings Pathway to further develop their skills.
The children’s Learn to Sail courses and programs hosted by the RQYS Sailing Academy cater for all ages over 6, and run during the School Term and during School Holidays.
Tackers 1 – 3 are children’s sailing courses that run during school holidays and through the school term. The courses are structured to teach children the basics of sailing while also supporting them to learn at their own pace. The students progress through 3 stages in Tackers – levels 1, 2 & 3. These stages are separate courses however all run at the same time as each other.
Sail & Play is a holiday program that offers a variety of water-based activities all week long, including sailing different boats, island trips, trying windsurfing, and stand up paddle-boarding.
Green Fleet & Intermediate Squad is a step up from Tackers, and is the racing development squad. Students are coached on Friday afternoons during the school terms and holiday camps are offered, alongside Saturday morning racing.
