What is the Optimist Green Fleet?
The “Opti” Green Fleet is a development initiative to encourage young sailors who have completed a learn to sail program to continue on to racing. The RQYS Opti Green Fleet is by invitation to those sailors who have complete the Junior Sailing Program as a 4 session introduction to racing before moving onto the Opti Racer Squad. Other sailors are able to join the Opti Green Fleet after completing a session with an instructor to showcase their skills.

When does the Opti Green Fleet train?
Currently the Optis kids train on a Saturday and or Sunday morning as per the calendar below. We also incorporate Thursday after school training for those keen to get on the water mid week and more often. There are also Opti Green Fleet Camps which are run on weekends and in school holidays. The idea to get the kids to a racing level faster!

What’s the Cost?
Saturday and Sunday mornings – Free! However all sailors must become Junior Members of the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron and this course is only avaliable for 4 sessions before moving up to the Opti Racer Squad
Thursday Afternoon Training – $15 each
Camps – From $100 for two days of training

Do I need my own Optimist?
The first answer is yes, however there are limited number of clubs boats available, and so we do encourage you to investigate purchasing your own Opti. Prices range from $1,000 – $3,500 for a brand new one. Once you have a boat it’s pretty inexpensive to go sailing and your able to “tune” your own boat – a huge speed advantage.
