Course Overview:
This course is designed for children between the ages of 7 and 14 who want to learn how to sail in a fun and exciting environment. It doesn’t matter whether the child has never sailed before or is learning to race. This course caters for each student’s individual needs. Run with the Yachting Australia Get into Sailing Syllabus.
For this course we use a mixture between the International Optimist, Vagabond, and Pacer Dinghies.

The Junior Sailing Program follows the Yachting Australia ‘Get into Sailing’ Syllabus:

Level 1 – Basic Skills 1
This is the initial entry level of the course. It is designed to provide a safe and enjoyable introduction to dinghy sailing. The course includes an introduction to fundamental boat handling skills and essential knowledge that will all the students the freedom or sailing small boats with the guidance from the Instructor. At the completion of this level the students will be issued with the Yachting Australia Basic Skills 1 Qualification.

Level 2 – Basic Skills 2
This course is designed to consolidate the experiences and knowledge gained in the Level 1-Basic Skills 1 course and to introduce skills and knowledge that will enable the successful participant to safely and competently sail a small boat in controlled conditions (light winds, enclosed waters) without guidance. At the completion of this course students will be issued with the Yachting Australia Basic Skills 2 Qualification

Level 3 – Better Sailing/ Racing Skills
The aim of this course is to introduce sailors to competitive sailing. It builds on the skills and knowledge gained in the Basic Skills 2 course and will enable you to manoeuvre the boat efficiently in light to moderate conditions on all points of sailing.  This course is designed to equip the sailor with enhanced skills and awareness of the surrounding environment and focuses on refining enhanced boat handling skills including speed control and manoeuvres and introducing participants to basic racing tactics and strategies.

Every student is issued with their own log book which will guide them through the levels. Students progress through the levels at their own pace and without any pressure. At the completion of each log book the students will be accessed on competency to be awarded the reverent qualification and move up to the next level.

It is important that students come prepared for the course as it is an outdoor sport and they will be exposed to the outside elements.
