About Windsurfing at RQYS

The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron is the premier windsurfing hub of Australia which homes the Australian Windsurfing Centre of Excellence and is a registered Australian Sailing Discover Sailing Centre. There are many opportunities for individuals and families of any age to engage in the learning, social and competitive aspects of this wonderful water sport.

Windsurfing has been a very active discipline within the club since 2008 with a fleet on the water for club racing every week throughout the sailing season and can be sighted on the water all throughout the year. The club has produced many national youth champions in the Techno 293 class granting youth world selection and senior representation in the RS:X class at international regattas.

The club welcomes a variety of boards including Techno 293, RS:X, Raceboards and Formula. See more information about Club Racing here.

What is on offer for windsurfers at RQYS

RQYS windsurfing occurs at two levels based on “racing ability”. There are the learn to windsurf programs which include the Australian Sailing Discover Sailing Accredited Windsurfing Courses as well as Club Windsurfing, a group that focuses on skill development in a social supported environment whilst having lots of fun. And secondly, standard Club racing series and regattas known as “off the beach racing and regattas”. These events follow the standard format for sailing races with the publication of Notices of Race and Sailing Instructions to define the rules and the detailed procedures for starts and finishes etc.

Learning to Windsurf at RQYS

No prior sailing experience is required to learn to windsurf. Equipment is supplied and the courses are run by Australian Sailing Accredited Windsurfing Instructors. Just finished a learn to windsurf course, or already a competent windsurfer?

Club windsurfing is a weekly initiative lead by windsurfing volunteers to facilitate supervised sailing for independent sailors to practice what they have learnt in the beginner courses and develop their skills in the company of friends. It’s a great opportunity to meet a group of like-minded people and learn from our experienced volunteers. Click here to find out more information and register to attend Club Windsurfing. Course Information available here.

Club Racing

The “Off the Beach Racing” caters for three windsurfing classes:

  1.  Techno 293 (including the Raceboard “hybrid class”)
  2. RSX (The Olympic class)
  3. Open Windsurfer (Raceboard and/or Formula equipment depending on racer preferences)

Club racing in this format occurs on every Saturday during the sailing season and follows the detailed Sailing Instructions prepared and provided by the RQ sailing committee. Generally there are 2 races held on each Saturday afternoon, whereby all windsurfers have a common start and a similar finish, but the individual classes might have unique courses to sail during each race. Sailing conditions are variable from one week to the next, and on any day the conditions can be very challenging. Safety boats are on hand to deal with circumstances where sailors need assistance, but there is a strong reliance on individual sailor having the experience and skill to either complete the races, or make their own way to shore/safety under most circumstances.
