11th Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race
Less than one day until the 11th Annual Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race, with a trifecta of Line Honours contenders expected to lead the charge to Keppel Bay for this year’s race which kicks off on Friday the 4th of August. SuperMaxi’s Wild Oats XI and the new Black Jack 100footer (ex Alpha Romeo) will use this race as part of their early build up to the Sydney to Hobart.
Wild Oats XI is back this year to defend its record breaking line honours title, after last year finishing the 8 hours in front of her personal best with a race time of just 16 hours, 56 minutes and 30 seconds.
The latest 100ft iteration of Black Jack will also be competing, adding to the growing company of SuperMaxis competing in the race each year.
For this local Maxi, just getting to the start line will be an achievement with the boat facing a tight schedule for conversion from its previous guise as Esmit Europa.
As with any major project, the slightest hindrance can cause a chain reaction of delays, so to have the rig in the boat barely three days before the Sydney to Southport Race speaks to the intense and imposing constraints of preparing this Grand Prix Machine.
Although despite the delicacy of this endeavor, Black Jack managed second-place in line honours for the Land Rover Sydney to Gold Coast Yacht Race. This exceptional achievement bodes well for the future performance of this vessel and its crew.
It will undoubtedly be equally captivating to watch Wild Oats XI and Black Jack continue to race up the Queensland coast in this year’s Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race.
Line honours is only part of the story though, with Overall winners possibly coming from anywhere in the field – particularly considering the light and variable forecast.
